This CD is sourced from a record. I noticed it during the first song. Except for a few accent hits the transient 'ping' of the ride cymbal has all but been erased during the first song. All we're left with is the sustain of the cymbal. The intros and fades of all the songs have also been heavily processed with digital noise reduction to minimize the signs of vinyl... ticks, pops and the swishing noise caused by the poor pressing quality of these LPs. Even with all that NR if you listen closely you can hear vinyl artifacts during every song. All the fadeouts have been so heavily processed with NR they sound closed off and end several seconds before the actual end of the song. There's also some distortion caused by tracking error of the needle going through the record grooves. Either the record was worn or the turntable wasn't aligned properly. Either way this CD exhibits a 'tizziness' that shouldn't be there.
I recently bought a still sealed copy of the LP. It's somewhat noisy even after washing it on my record vacuum cleaner but has nice fidelity. Does this CD sound better than the unaltered vinyl? No. I appreciate the work that went into cleaning the audio up but I'm afraid it was too heavy handed. Like I said, some of the songs are several seconds shorter due to the heavy NR erasing the last few notes of the fade outs. You're losing music.
It's not a horrible sounding CD though. The EQ is tasteful. Some lower mids have been added for increased warmth and it's only moderately compressed without any signs of limiting. Still, I would only suggest this CD for diehard Harry Nilsson fans who don't have access to a decent record player and are willing to pay too much for a CD of a recording of a record. After hearing this disc I made my own needle drop of the LP and cleaned it up to my satisfaction. The results are much better but I'm not trying to hide the fact that I used a record.
I guess I'd gotten my hopes up with this one so overall it's a disappointing release.
